TAXI SURCHARGE

Fairfax Board Approves $1 Per Trip for Rising Fuel Costs

Starting today, taxicab customers will pay an additional $1 a trip in Fairfax County to help taxi companies bear the rising cost of fuel.

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved the surcharge yesterday on an emergency basis and made it effective through Aug. 6.

The board agreed to hold a public hearing Aug. 6 on whether to extend the surcharge through January. The supervisors enacted the surcharge at the request of Murphy Brothers Inc., owner of Falls Church Yellow Cab and Red Top Cab.

CHILD CUSTODY DISPUTE

Visitation Granted to Winchester Woman's Ex-Partner

A judge in Vermont has dissolved the civil union of two women, including one from Virginia, whose interstate child custody case reached the U.S Supreme Court.

In his decision, Rutland County Family Court Judge William Cohen awarded custody of the 5-year-old girl, Isabella, to her biological mother, Lisa Miller of Winchester. But he granted regular visitation to Janet Jenkins of Fair Haven, Vt.

Starting in August, Jenkins and Isabella are to spend every other weekend together, alternating between Vermont and Virginia.

In his ruling, handed down Friday, Cohen wrote that Miller had said she would abide by the visitation order. Her attorney in Virginia, Phillip S. Griffin II, did not immediately return a call yesterday seeking comment.
