Heritage has hired Anthony Long as its new girls' basketball head coach to replace Carmel Keilty, according to Athletic Director Ron Petrella.
Long, a 2000 graduate of Loudoun Valley and a Vikings boys' assistant coach last season, is also the junior varsity football coach at Heritage and was a multi-sport athlete at Loudoun Valley.
Loudoun Valley head coach Chad Dawson "has been real encouraging," Long said of the transition. "He likes to see his coaches move on and become head coaches."
Long played basketball, football, baseball and ran track in high school and played football at Frostburg State. He graduated from Frostburg in 2004 with a degree in math. . . .
Freedom Athletic Director Rusty Lowery said the school could have a new boys' basketball coach by Wednesday, adding that he has a candidate and made a recommendation to the school board Tuesday. Glen Fidler recently stepped down for personal reasons.
In the meantime, former Freedom assistant athletic director Mike Benson has been hired at Briar Woods as the boys' basketball coach, replacing Dave Morris. Mike Oblas has been hired as Benson's replacement.
Oblas coached cross-country at Heritage and was an assistant baseball coach at Stone Bridge. He taught physical education at Farmwell Middle School but will step down from that position to take over full-time responsibilities as assistant athletic director.
Players Draw Interest
Junior Andrey Semenov and senior Travon Vann of Notre Dame Academy are being pursued by several Division I schools, according to Coach Tim Fudd. Penn State, Central Connecticut and Duquesne are recruiting Vann, a 6-foot-3-inch point guard; Semenov has scholarship offers from La Salle, Temple, Saint Joseph's, Marist and Richmond.
Semenov will play in the Peach Jam, an AAU tournament July 12-15. The tournament draws the top high school basketball players from across the nation to play in front of many college coaches. . . .
Chatman Young, a 6-3, 270-pound offensive lineman from Dominion, has signed a partial scholarship with Howard University. . . .
Broad Run guard/forward Erin Thompson has signed a letter of intent to play for Lees-McRae, a Division II school in North Carolina.
Meanwhile, teammate and senior Alexis Campbell is being scouted by several Division I schools, including Sacred Heart, Delaware, Sienna and Saint Joseph's, according to Coach Mike O'Hara. Campbell is playing on the Virginia Vogues AAU basketball team this summer. . . .
Heritage guard D.J. Summers has signed a letter of intent to play for Potomac State (W. Va.) College, and 6-6 forward Myron McGowan has accepted a scholarship offer to play for Garrett (Md.) Junior College.
Lacrosse Honors
Foxcroft girls' lacrosse players Ashton Marshall, a freshman, and Meredith Harris, a sophomore, competed in the All-America Lacrosse Classic for underclassmen Saturday in Baltimore.
The game pitted the top underclassmen from Baltimore against the top underclassmen from the D.C. area. The Baltimore team won, 15-13. Marshall, an attacker, scored for the D.C. all-stars.
"It was really fun getting to know all the girls," Marshall said. "I had to work really hard to keep up with the level of competition, but I was able to learn a lot." . . .
Heritage boys' lacrosse coach Jason Burke was named coach of the year by the U.S. Lacrosse Men's Division Coaches Council of Secondary Schools.
