CRIME
2 Killed in Separate Shootings
D.C. police officers are investigating the shooting deaths of two men in separate incidents within an hour of each other late Tuesday, authorities said.
In the first incident, officers were called to an alley behind the 1200 block of 18th Street NE after gunshots were reported. They found William Marquez Aull, 20, about 10:50 p.m. with gunshot wounds to his head and upper body. Aull, who lived in the 1600 block of Trinidad Avenue NE, was dead at the scene, officers said.
About an hour later, officers found Kirk A. Hart, 28, who had been shot, in his apartment complex in the 2700 block of Robinson Place SE. He was pronounced dead at Washington Hospital Center.

4 Teens Crash Stolen SUV
Four teenagers driving a stolen SUV crashed into a car driven by an off-duty officer last night, and police were investigating whether they might be linked to robberies in Northeast.
The incident, in the 4900 block of Benning Road NE, occurred about 6:30 p.m., when the SUV smashed into a car occupied by the D.C. housing police officer and a 3-year-old. The teenagers, the officer and the child were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police said detectives were questioning the teens because witnesses saw a similar vehicle at the scene of at least six robberies at gas stations in the past week.

LOGAN CIRCLE
Man Ordered to Remove Ladder
A D.C. Superior Court judge ordered a Logan Circle man yesterday to remove a ladder attached to his house. Police have said they think burglars have been using the ladder to climb onto roofs and break into homes through skylights.
The judge also signed a search and seizure warrant for officers to take the ladder to use as evidence in the burglaries on Vermont Avenue NW, D.C. police Lt. Michael Smith said.
Neighbors and officers were at odds with the homeowner, Nathaniel Rabinowitz, who said he chained the ladder to his house in the 1700 block of Vermont Avenue so he could feed birds. Neighbors had been asking him to take it down for six years.

FIRE DEPARTMENT
Gay-Outreach Liaison Appointed
D.C. fire Chief Dennis L. Rubin announced yesterday the appointment of Sgt. Jane "J.B." Wallace as his department's first liaison to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered communities.
Wallace is a 19-year member of the department.
The department has had strained relations with the city's transgendered community since the case of Tyra Hunter in 1995. Hunter was seriously injured after being hit by a car, but firefighters who responded to the scene momentarily halted treatment and ridiculed Hunter after discovering she had male genitalia.
