Child's Play

Stir up your child's entrepreneurial and charitable spirit with Sunkist's Take a Stand initiative. With their parents' permission, children ages 7 to 12 can visit http://www.sunkist.com/takeastand to fill out a registration form for a free lemonade stand. Available on the Web site are recipes, advertising signs, sheets for tracking sales and calculating profit, safety tips and advice on running a successful stand.

Not all the profits are meant to be pocketed for ice cream money or toys, however. Children can learn about the value of giving by detailing in 100 words or fewer what nonprofit organization they want to dedicate a portion of their earnings to.

The first batch of 10,000 stands have been snapped up, spurring the company to produce 5,000 more, which are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The program, now in its fourth year, has raised an estimated $1.5 million, with 383 kids from the Washington area participating last year and 282 signed up so far this year.

Though the stands can take about eight weeks to be delivered, that doesn't mean kids can't test such recipes as blueberry lemon spritzer, lemon-limeade and minty strawberry lemonade.
