Hamburg QB Is Named MVP Of World Bowl: Sea Devils 37, Galaxy 28

FRANKFURT, Germany, June 23 -- When quarterback Casey Bramlet was cut by the Washington Redskins in training camp last summer, he returned to the Hamburg Sea Devils of NFL Europa with his mind set on improving.

Bramlet will arrive at Redskins training camp next month as an MVP after throwing a World Bowl-record four touchdown passes in a 37-28 victory against the defending champion Frankfurt Galaxy in front of 48,125 at the Commerzbank Arena.

Bramlet finished with 20 completions on 27 attempts for 347 yards. His next goal will be to earn a roster spot with Washington.

"I knew the situation last year when they brought in [associate head coach-offense] Al Saunders and they brought in [backup] Todd Collins. I knew I wasn't going to get a lot of reps," he said. "Going back to Washington, the goal is to make the team. I know I'm not going to compete for a starting spot."

Hamburg Coach Vince Martino believes Bramlet is ready to make the jump to the NFL.

"In my mind, yes, he is an NFL quarterback," he said. "This year, he managed the offense tremendously."

Bramlet was in control from the first series on Saturday, a 12-play drive that he kept alive with a 12-yard scramble on third and 10. The drive ended with his three-yard touchdown pass to Justin Jenkins.

On its next possession, Hamburg pushed the lead to 13-0 after Bramlet found Marcus Maxwell streaking down the right sideline, the end result of a perfectly timed flea-flicker.

"When we went out and got on them early, we took them out of the game a little bit," Bramlet said.

The Galaxy cut Hamburg's lead to 23-14 at the start of the third quarter, but moments later Bramlet connected with Josh Davis on a 51-yard touchdown strike. The play started as a fake double reverse on third and three at midfield.

"All week [in practice] we had a couple of those [trick] plays. We hadn't shown a lot of trick plays this season, so we caught them off guard," Bramlet said. "It felt like it was going to be one of those games where the last person to score wins."

Bramlet added a 10-yard strike in the fourth quarter to cap his record-setting performance.

Bramlet will return to the United States next week to prepare for his wedding on July 7 in Jackson Hole, Wyo.

"It's going to be pretty busy," he said. "Get back, have the wedding, then get rolling and learn the playbook, get working out and get into shape."

Bramlet will likely be competing against newcomers Jordan Palmer and Sam Hollenbach for the third-string job.

"I've seen what's going on [in Washington] but I've been trying to concentrate on what's going on over here," he said. "It's going to be a battle, there's great competition but I feel like I learned a lot over here."
