It was a day of barbecue and Legos in downtown Washington yesterday.

Thousands of barbecue lovers strolled along Pennsylvania Avenue NW between Ninth and 14th streets sampling Texas and North Carolina-style sauces and smoked pork during the 15th annual National Capital Barbecue Battle, a fundraiser for the Metropolitan Police Boys & Girls Clubs.

Just blocks away on the Mall, children from more than 50 countries gathered to celebrate art as part of the World Children's Festival.

The festival includes young artists working on various projects, including a basketball court-size Lego mosaic of the United States, about 75 music and theater performances by children from Liberia to Nicaragua, and many hands-on activities. The celebration continues today with a focus on peace and leadership.

Hosted by the International Child Art Foundation and designed to spark social change, the festival takes place every four years.
