Festival Focus: Asia, Ireland and Virginia
· The annual Smithsonian Folklife Festival kicks off today on the Mall. This year the 10-day event focuses on the Mekong River in Asia; Northern Ireland; and Virginia. Kids can learn about these regions through crafts, games, performances and food.
The Mekong River creates a cultural connection through Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos and China. You can learn native dances, try calligraphy, create shadow puppets or learn the best way to use chopsticks.
At the Northern Ireland program, learn traditional Irish sports such as hurling and rounders. Or try clay sculpting or archaeological digging.
For local flavor, travel through Virginia history, weave your own rope or watch an artist reconstruct the face of a Virginia teen from the 17th century.
Correction: Monday's review of "Half Magic" for the KidsPost Summer Book Club gave the wrong information about where the book is set. The story takes place in Toledo, Ohio.
