Hurt Tejada Unlikely to Be Traded

BALTIMORE, June 26 -- Baltimore Orioles shortstop Miguel Tejada will miss more than a month with a broken bone in his left wrist, which he suffered June 20 and ended his consecutive-games streak at 1,152.

The extended time away greatly reduces the Orioles' ability to trade Tejada by the July 31 deadline, at which point he likely will be on a rehabilitation assignment. After an MRI exam on Tuesday, it was determined Tejada will wear a splint for two weeks and will be able to begin participating in baseball activity in a month.

"It's pretty tough for me," Tejada said. "I like to play baseball. What can I say? It's nothing I can worry about."

Tejada has been rumored in possible trades for the past two seasons and for much of this season. Tejada said Tuesday he wants to stay with the Orioles, even though he believes the injury won't affect him long-term.

"Right now, I'm here," Tejada said. "It's not like this is going to be something real bad. After I start playing again, I will be fine. I'm going to be the same player. [Trade rumors] are not something I pay attention to. I signed here for six years. I have 2 1/2 years to go. I just work here. I don't know why there is so much trade talk about myself. I don't want to really pay attention to that."

Tejada broke his wrist when San Diego Padres right-hander Doug Brocail hit him with a pitch. The day after, Brocail called Tejada to apologize. "I felt sorry for him," Tejada said. "I think he feels guilty."

Baez Tests His Arm

Danys Baez threw 25 pitches from flat ground, his first tosses since going on the disabled list with tendinitis in his right forearm. . . .

Adam Loewen visited the Orioles' clubhouse without the cast he previously had worn on his left forearm. He said he plans to start rehabbing immediately.
