FAIRFAX COUNTY
Mandatory Paper Recycling Coming Soon
Fairfax County officials announced yesterday that residents, businesses and institutions will be required to recycle cardboard, magazines, office paper, catalogs, cereal boxes, telephone books, envelopes and junk mail beginning July 10.
The Board of Supervisors adopted the tougher recycling rules last year. The county's solid-waste management program handles more than 1.5 million tons of municipal solid waste and recyclables annually. It is projected to handle an additional 139,000 to 500,000 tons of waste a year by 2025.
ALEXANDRIA SCHOOL BOARD
Vote on Superintendent's Contract Is Upheld
The Alexandria School Board voted last night against rescinding its May 21 decision not to renew the contract of Superintendent Rebecca L. Perry.
The 5 to 4 vote came after weeks of public debate and rancor over the issue. The meeting lasted more than four and a half hours, as more than 50 people lined up to speak for or against the board's decision.
"I am very disappointed that again the board voted not to renew my contract . . . before an evaluation was done," Perry said after the vote. "However, it is within the authority of the board."
After the vote, the board was scheduled to evaluate Perry's performance as the meeting stretched into early today. Perry's contract is set to expire in June 2008.
