Rabid Bat Scratches Jogger

FRANCONIA AREA, Springfield Dr., 6800 block, 10 p.m. June 14. After a 64-year-old Lorton man ran along a road, he noticed a bat clinging to his sock. The animal left a small scratch on his leg. Animal control picked up the bat, which tested positive for rabies.

Dog Bites Good Samaritan

MAIN STREET AND ESTEL ROAD,7 p.m. June 20. Two dogs were running in traffic, and one was hit by a vehicle. When a 34-year-old man tried to move the injured dog from the roadway, he was bitten on the hand. An animal control officer and a police officer captured the injured dog, which had broken bones but was expected to recover. The other dog was cornered in a yard and caught. The dogs were taken to the city shelter. The pets' owners said the animals had been inside their home. How they escaped was unknown. Both dogs had current rabies vaccinations. The biting dog was put under a 10-day quarantine at home.
