BALTIMORE, June 28 -- Orioles interim manager Dave Trembley found out Wednesday that the job he waited his entire career for would likely last at least until August, when President of Baseball Operations Andy MacPhail said the Orioles may renew their search for a full-time replacement for the fired Sam Perlozzo.
On Thursday, Trembley responded to the decision with the same energy he has shown in his first 10 days in the dugout.
"I couldn't ask for a better situation," Trembley said. "To sit in this dugout the last couple nights and see all these people standing on their feet cheering for the Orioles, my goodness sakes, people wait a lifetime for those kind of experiences. And I've been fortunate enough to get them.
"I still feel like the first day when [vice presidents] Mike [Flanagan] and Jim [Duquette] called me in. I don't feel like it's a tryout. Obviously, I'm very appreciative of the opportunity and very confident of my abilities and very grateful for the cooperation I'm getting from the players."
Orioles players have uniformly praised Trembley as he has implemented his brand of baseball, from more hit-and-runs to the team standing together during the national anthem.
One thing Trembley has yet to bring from his minor league days is his fine system, which entailed players buying him two-liter bottles of Diet Pepsi as punishment. "He had a refrigerator full of them," said Brandon Fahey, who played for Trembley last season at Class AAA Ottawa.
Call-Up Gets First Start
Fahey, who was called up Wednesday, started at shortstop on Thursday. Fahey arrived at Camden Yards 15 minutes before game time Wednesday after his flight was delayed for four hours, but he played the ninth as a defensive replacement.
Fahey was used as a utility player last season during his time in Baltimore, playing mostly left field. Now, though, he'll be used only at shortstop. . . .
Danys Baez threw for the second time Thursday as part of his rehab for tendinitis in his forearm. Baez will pitch a minor league rehab assignment before returning.
