Late Saturday, Glasgow Airport remained closed and witnesses were still being questioned.

Witnesses interviewed on British television reported seeing one of the men in the jeep pour gasoline on himself and the burning vehicle, as flames, smoke and chaos engulfed the area near the check-in counters.

"It was just a small fire at first. Then there was an enormous explosion, and it really was a big explosion," said Robin Patterson, 42, a passenger from Rochester, England.

"The guy next to the car, his skin and clothes just fell off him," he said.

Police said one of the men in the jeep was severely burned and in critical condition in a hospital.

[British police said early Sunday they had arrested two people in northern England in connection with the London and Glasgow attacks, the Reuters news service reported. The arrests were made in the county of Cheshire by counterterrorism officers, police said in a statement. No other details were available.]

Staff writers Del Quentin Wilber and Michael D. Shear in Washington and special correspondent Karla Adam in London contributed to this report.
