Giants LF Barry Bonds hit his 750th career home run Friday night, pulling the San Francisco slugger within five of tying Hank Aaron's record.

The 42-year-old led off the eighth in San Francisco by driving a 3-2 pitch from Diamondbacks RHP Livan Hernandez an estimated 380 feet to right-center for his 16th home run of the season. The blast tied the score at 3, but the Giants lost, 4-3, in 10 innings, with Bonds grounding out to end the game.

The home run came an inning after a fan hopped the fence and ran out to Bonds in left field. The seven-time NL MVP calmly greeted the man and walked him off and into the custody of security personnel.

Andrew Clapp, 24, of Fargo, N.D., faces charges of public drunkenness and interfering with a sporting event.

· WALKOUT FIZZLES OUT: Despite a much-publicized effort to display fan discontent during the Pirates' 15th consecutive losing season, only a few thousand fans at most left their seats in protest following the third inning of last night's 7-2 Pirates victory over the Nationals.

Only about 100 fans were seen leaving PNC Park immediately following the third, and it appeared that many of the fans who vacated their seats returned not long after leaving.

The protest effort may have been harmed by an unlikely source -- the Pirates' offense. One of the majors' lowest-scoring teams scored six runs in the second inning to take a 6-1 lead only an inning before the walkout fizzled out.

· METS' SOSA HURT: Mets RHP Jorge Sosa left yesterday's 8-3 win over the Phillies after straining his left hamstring running to first base in the sixth inning.

Sosa ran hard down the line after bunting and barely beat the relay throw to first to avoid a double play. He immediately grabbed his leg and briefly sat on the ground before he was helped off the field.

Manager Willie Randolph said it won't be known for a few days how long Sosa will be out.
