A District police officer shot and killed a man yesterday after he grabbed another officer's gun and started firing.
Police did not release the name of the 38-year-old man because family members had not been notified.
The shooting occurred at 5:49 p.m. in the 100 block of Division Avenue NE after the man, who was driving a black Cadillac Escalade, failed to stop at an intersection and ran from police, said Sgt. Joe Gentile, a police spokesman. During a scuffle with two officers, the man grabbed the service weapon of one of the officers and fired an undetermined number of shots at them, Gentile said. They were not injured.
A third officer, responding to the scene, shot the man "multiple times," Gentile said. The man was taken to Prince George's Hospital Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The name of the officer who shot the man was not released, although Gentile said the officer is 25 and has worked in the 6th Police District for three years.
The officer was placed on routine administrative leave with pay pending an investigation.
