It's finally cooled off enough to venture outdoors, a perfect opportunity to spend the evening out. For interns, though, there are troubles to contend with: no car, no money, no idea where to find this mystical "9:30." And, in some cases, not yet legal.

What's a young go-getter to do?

Today, impress your friends and broaden your D.C. experience (and no, choosing Ozio over Rumors does not count as "personal growth"). Flit from one cool outing to another all day long, all free, all within walking distance of a single Metro station: U Street, on the Green and Yellow lines. Tourists or city folk with friends from out of town, you can also take note:

Roll by a Skate Shop and Meet a Pro: New sneaker store/skate shop Palace 5ive on 14th Street NW hosts a little party this afternoon with pro street skateboarder Stevie Williams, who'll be hanging out doing a signing from 2 to 5 p.m. A DJ will spin, the store will break out a ramp and hold a "best trick" contest for skaters, and Red Bull will be flowing. Free. 2216 14th St. NW. 202-299-9008.

Peek at the Mind of an "Imaginary Soul Superstar": This small show of hand-painted, funk-inspired record sleeves and other items is a must-see because it tells one of the best D.C. stories around: They are the works of a regular guy with rock-star ambitions who decades ago dreamed up an imaginary double life as "Mingering Mike," and then created fake covers, fake liners and fake albums as relics of this never-to-be existence. They ended up in a thrift store, where they were found by an enterprising record-head. And now you can see them at Hemphill Fine Arts. Free. Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Through July 28. 1515 14th St. NW. 202-234-5601.

Can't Get Into Mos Def? The Next Best Thing is Mocking Him: Love this plot: A group of actors, frustrated by the rappers-turned-actors who get all the good parts, kidnaps a famous rapper to secure a film role. (Perhaps the most successful real-world culprit, Mos Def, is also in town tonight for a sold-out show at the 9:30 club. Coincidence?) The DC Hip-Hop Theater Festival performance of "The Actor's Rap!" is at Studio Theatre at 7 p.m. (And stay for the musical-theater-sketch fusion "The Other Side" at 9:30 p.m.). Free. Space A, 1501 14th St. NW No. 3. 202-724-5613.

Feed Your Dirty Garage Soul at the Black Cat: Finally, dance well into Sunday morning at the Cat, the best place to catch scenester kids shaking it to the Smiths on weekend nights. Head to the Backstage (through the Red Room bar in the back), where there's a free 1960s-70s funk-soul dance party; Soul Call Paul and Mad Squirrel spin. 9:30 p.m. to close. 1811 14th St. NW. 202-667-7960.
