The Virginia medical examiner's office has concluded its investigation into the death of Kevin Mitchell, ruling that the former Washington Redskins linebacker died from heart disease and natural causes, a representative of the office said. Mitchell, 36, died in his sleep in April, shocking his friends and former teammates.

Mitchell played four years with the Redskins, and he and his family continued to live in Ashburn after his playing career ended in 2003.

The recent findings concur with the initial results from Mitchell's preliminary autopsy, which attributed the cause of death to a heart attack. Mitchell's wife, Denise, is expecting the couple's third child in January.
