FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga., July 26 -- NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell denied Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Odell Thurman's request to be reinstated for the upcoming season.

Thurman will miss a second straight season. He is eligible to apply for reinstatement after the 2007 season.

He was suspended for the first four games of last season for violating the league's substance abuse policy, then had the suspension extended for the remainder of the season after being arrested on a drunken-driving charge.

A. Jones's Request Denied

The NFL denied a request by suspended Tennessee Titans cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones to participate in training camp.

Jones and his representatives had hoped that Goodell would allow Jones to report to camp. But the Titans apparently opposed the idea, and the league rejected the application for Jones to revise the terms of his suspension. In April, Goodell suspended Jones for the season for violating the league's personal conduct policy. Goodell made Jones's suspension eligible for review after 10 games. . . .

New York Jets tailback Curtis Martin announced his retirement. Martin, the fourth-leading rusher in NFL history, missed all of last season because of knee problems. He said at a news conference that he would like to become an owner of an NFL franchise. . . .

Defensive end Gaines Adams, the fourth overall selection in the NFL draft, agreed to a six-year contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Hours later, the team released defensive end Simeon Rice, whose 121 career sacks rank second among active players behind the New York Giants' Michael Strahan. General Manager Bruce Allen said Rice, who missed much of last season with a shoulder injury, failed a physical when he reported to camp earlier in the day. . . .

The Buffalo Bills opened training camp with starting quarterback J.P. Losman sidelined. Losman is suffering from a strained lower back and team officials called his status day-to-day. . . .

Garrett Reid, son of Philadelphia Eagles Coach Andy Reid, pleaded guilty to traffic and drug charges and is to serve at least three days in jail. Another of Reid's sons, Britt, decided to go to trial on drug and weapon charges. Both were arrested in January, leading their father to take a five-week leave of absence. . . .

Wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez, the Indianapolis Colts' first-round pick, agreed to a five-year contract worth $10.3 million, a person close to the negotiations told the Associated Press. . . .

The Dallas Cowboys signed their top two draft picks, linebacker Anthony Spencer and offensive lineman James Marten. Spencer, the 26th overall pick, signed a five-year, $9 million contract and Marten, a third-rounder, got a four-year deal. Both joined the team for its third practice of training camp. . . .

Carolina Panthers tackle Jeremy Bridges was arrested and charged with misdemeanor assault yesterday after he was accused of pointing a gun at an employee of a Charlotte strip club on Wednesday. Bridges was released on $3,000 bond.
