The Look

Her sweater: A French Connection cardigan. "I like to stick to the basics," she says. "I think you can't go wrong with white and black."

Her dress : Express's spaghetti-strap frock. "It's a very versatile dress," she says. "You can dress it up with a scarf around the waist; you can dress it down with a casual belt."

Her belt : A scarf she bought while traveling in Spain. "I liked the colors in it -- they're definitely eye-catching," she says. Bonus: It doubles as a head scarf.

Her style :"I'm very inspired by my grandmother," she says. "She was just very simple, yet elegant -- one of the last real ladies."

Why it works : With a simple scarf, Nurmi brings basic black to life. Still, she knows that less can be more when it comes to accessories: The shelves at Urban Outfitters may be piled high with busy, layerable pendants, but Nurmi's bare neck looks far more chic.
