1775 Austen is born in Hampshire, England, on Dec. 16, the seventh of eight children born to a clergyman, George, and his wife Cassandra.
1787-1793 Austen writes short stories and parodies for her family.
1795-96 Austen works on the novels that will later become "Pride and Prejudice" and "Sense and Sensibility."
1802 Austen accepts, then rejects a marriage proposal from Harris Biggs-Wither, the brother of one of her friends.
1803 Austen sells a version of "Northanger Abbey" to a publisher, but he fails to print it.
1815 Austen suddenly falls ill -- possibly with what we now know as Addison's disease.
1817 Austen dies on July 18.
