Jesse I. 'Jim' Miller Jr.Car Sales, Marketing Executive

Jesse I. "Jim" Miller Jr., 81, a sales and marketing executive for Saab, Volvo and Subaru who later headed membership efforts for the American International Automotive Dealers Association, died July 20 at his home in Bethesda. He had heart disease.

Mr. Miller had worked for the trade association since retiring from Subaru in 1987. He spent the early years of his automobile career, in the 1950s, doing sales work for Ourisman Chevrolet as well as Fadex Commercial Corp., distributors of the BMW Isetta.

A Chevy Chase native, Mr. Miller graduated from the Landon School in 1943 and served in the Army Air Forces in Europe during World War II.

He attended George Washington University before starting a career in broadcast journalism that lasted until the early 1950s. He was an announcer for WGMS radio and then an on-camera sports reporter and booth announcer with WRC-TV.

He was a financial supporter of such area organizations as the Kennedy Center, Strathmore Hall and Suburban Hospital.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Ann Goldsmith Miller of Bethesda; two children, Patricia A. Miller of Bethesda and Douglas J. Miller Sr. of Timonium, Md.; a sister; and three grandchildren.

Harry S. McPhilimyArmy Department Geographer

Harry Simpson McPhilimy, 85, an Army Department geographer from the late 1940s to 1977, died July 25 at Greenspring Village retirement community in Springfield. He had lung disease.

Mr. McPhilimy settled in the Washington area in 1971 and was a member of Mount Vernon Country Club in Alexandria. He moved to Greenspring Village from Alexandria about three years ago.

He was a native of Indiana, Pa., and a 1947 graduate of George Washington University. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
