The orange Dodge Magnum SRT8 with the license plate honoring The U could have theoretically belonged to Clinton Portis or Sean Taylor, but once you look under the hood you can figure it out. Those "89" icons kind of give it away.
"Simple stuff," Santana Moss said of his car's features. "You know, people give me praise for it, but I really don't care who's got one better than mine. I like it, you know what I'm saying?"
Sure. The parking lot at Redskins Park has been fairly tame, since most of the players ride here from their dorms in massive New World tour buses. But the lot has its highlights, starting with the bright orange Mossmobile, continuing on the other side of the lot (where Brandon Lloyd left this morning in his much-praised Aston Martin and returned in the afternoon in a brown '85 El Camino) and climaxing with the Jon Jansen RV back by the trees.
Moss said he's also got a '75 Caprice convertible, a '71 Impala hardtop, a Hummer, a Benz and a BMW, although the Magnum has been in the parking lot nearly every day this month. Rock Cartwright says his favorite Redskinmobile is Fred Smoot's Bentley: "real nice, real elegant, really classy looking," Cartwright said. Marcus Washington also cast a vote for Smoot, who has been taking his two-toned BMW to Redskins Park while his Rolls is serviced.
Smoot, who also owns a blue '63 Chevy Impala among other vehicles, liked Lloyd's Aston Martin. Renaldo Wynn, who hosted an offseason car show, praised Cornelius Griffin's '64 Impala and his '69 Camaro. Jordan Palmer, meanwhile, cast a vote for his own ride.
"A 1997 Cadillac DeVille that I bought for $6,000," he said. "That's the nicest car in the parking lot, for sure. Runs like a gem; it's only got 50,000 miles on it. I found it on Craig's List the first week I got out here. I talked him down a little bit, and then I pimped it out a little bit, put a system into it and tinted it, just basic stuff."
He was signing autographs at the time, and fans were clamoring for his towel and wristbands. "No, you can't have my underwear," he said, before telling me that he learned to drive in a DeVille.
"I'm keeping that car forever, for sure," he said. "I think I beat out Rock Cartwright; he has a '97 DeVille, and his is a little more pimped out, but I think mine is sweeter. So you can put that I beat him out for nicest Caddy on the team. All beige. Everything on it's beige. All original. It's sweet." . . .
Jansen said [the offensive linemen] just watch some TV and grab some grub in the RV, which he owns and which he drove to D.C. from Michigan. Other players have noticed.
"Jansen will probably pull up in a tractor one of these days," Smoot said.
But Jansen said that they've invited various other position players into the RV, and that what happens inside is sort of confidential.
"I can talk about it," he said, "but we're not allowed to let anybody in. That's not authorized by the committee. It's a secret committee. If you want to get in there I can take it to 'em and see if they'll let anybody in. They haven't yet, so I wouldn't count on it."
