AES, an Arlington power company with production and distribution facilities in two dozen countries, announced plans last week to expand its wind-energy-generation business into China.
The company said it signed a joint venture to build a wind farm in Hebei province. The venture, which AES said has the capacity to generate as much as 225 megawatts of electricity, is scheduled to begin commercial operations in 2009. The company already operates seven power plants in China that generate more than 2,800 megawatts from coal, oil, natural gas and hydroelectric technologies.
"We see tremendous growth opportunities for wind generation in China, which has committed to adding 30,000 megawatts of new wind power by 2020," Tom Kunde, vice president, AES North Asia, said in a statement.
AES's U.S. wind facilities can produce more than 1,000 megawatts. It has projects underway around the world that could add another 3,000 megawatts.
