Maryland linebacker Alex Wujciak will miss the season after suffering a partial tear of his anterior cruciate ligament, Coach Ralph Friedgen said yesterday. Wujciak, a redshirt freshman, was competing for a starting job this season.
"This is a big blow for us right now," Friedgen said.
Wujciak was injured during Tuesday's practice when he slipped while rushing the quarterback. Friedgen said Wujciak hyperextended his knee while falling. Though Wujciak has yet to play a down for the Terrapins, he was highly regarded by the team's coaching staff, and Friedgen briefly considered playing Wujciak as a freshman last season.
Before this season, Wujciak moved to the Terrapins' "Leo" position, a hybrid defensive end-outside linebacker, to compete with Trey Covington. Coaches also considered moving Wujciak back to middle linebacker, where he would challenge Chase Bullock.
Terrapins tackle Scott Burley was granted another season of eligibility by the NCAA. Burley, a senior and the expected starter at left tackle, missed last season with an injury after briefly playing in the season opener.
Friedgen said he won't name a starting quarterback until after tomorrow's scrimmage, though Jordan Steffy performed best in a game simulation yesterday. Friedgen brought in referees to create a gamelike situation to test his quarterbacks. . . .
Emmanuel Moody, the second-leading rusher as a freshman for Southern California last season, has decided to transfer after being caught in a glut of highly regarded tailbacks.
Moody, a 6-foot-1, 205-pound sophomore from Texas, gained 459 yards on 79 carries last season before missing the final four games because of a sprained ankle. He entered camp as one of 10 players competing for playing time at tailback.

Federer beat Baghdatis, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5. Baghdatis helped Federer fight off two set points with a double fault. . . .
Top-seeded Justine Henin advanced to the quarterfinals of the Rogers Cup in Toronto with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Shuai Peng.
Henin will face sixth-seeded Nadia Petrova, who defeated No. 10 seed Patty Schnyder, 6-4, 6-1.
