Oh, the Places You've Gone!

Sunday, August 19, 2007

Every August about this time, we wonder: Could our readers possibly top themselves again? And, once again, the answer is a resounding yes.

We received more than 700 entries for our eighth annual photo contest, among them the requisite shots of world landmarks glistening in the sun and exotic critters straying entirely too close into camera range. (Not that we can't love those sorts of shots: See a gallery of this year's honorable mentions on Pages 6-7 for proof.)

But Joe Elbert, The Post's assistant managing editor for photography, was similarly wowed by the "wonderful street photography" that arrived in the mail; several of his favorites are represented in the gallery. And what about the subject of our stunning first-place shot? "I love her attitude," said Elbert, who judged the contest with members of the Travel team.

Thanks to all of you who entered, and remember there's always next year. To that end, we asked staffer Anne McDonough to check out some of the newest geegaws and online options available for would-be photo stars. Go to Page 5 for:

· A comparison of four photo-hosting Web sites.

· A look at innovative ways to use your photos, instead of confining them to online galleries or musty albums.

· A review of a nifty new doodad that'll help put you in the pictures you're taking.

· A report on disposable digital cameras and the quality of their prints.
