Redshirt Freshman Moten Gets the Call for Terrapins

Redshirt freshman Adrian Moten will start at strong-side middle linebacker when Maryland opens its season against Villanova tomorrow, Terrapins Coach Ralph Friedgen said yesterday.

Injuries to projected starters Chase Bullock and David Philistin forced the coaches to move Moten, a Gwynn Park graduate, from outside linebacker to the inside during camp, and Friedgen said he has proven to be a natural despite only playing the position for about two weeks.

"A lot of things come easy for him," Friedgen said.

Meanwhile, Jack Griffin will start over Dane Randolph at right tackle. In camp, Friedgen said Griffin overtook Randolph, who saw significant playing time last year and entered camp atop the depth chart. Wide receiver Isaiah Williams reclaimed his spot atop the depth chart after redshirt freshman LaQuan Williams had passed him during camp.

Friedgen also said wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey will play tomorrow. His status was in question because he had been nursing a foot injury suffered midway through camp, and yesterday he was still practicing in a yellow non-contact jersey.
