Nearly 50 million students are enrolled in about 97,000 public elementary and secondary schools across the country.
3.2 million teachers are employed in public elementary and secondary schools, according to projections.

1.1 million students, or 2 percent, were home-schooled in 2003.
887,000 students attended the country's approximately 3,300 charter schools during the 2004-05 school year, the latest year for which national statistics are available.
20 percent of school-age children spoke a language other than English at home in 2005, the latest year for which national information is available.
30 percent of students entering high school read at grade level.
Nearly 7,000 U.S. high school students dropped out every school day.
70 percent of all entering freshmen and slightly more than half of students of color finish high school with a regular diploma.
