Former Florida State all-American and NFL Pro Bowl linebacker Peter Boulware turned politician yesterday, announcing his plans to seek a vacant House seat in the Florida Legislature next year.

Boulware, 32, was joined by his wife, Kensy, and their three young children along with several key Republicans, including state party chairman Jim Greer, at a sweltering morning announcement held in front of the Florida House of Representatives building in Tallahassee.

Republicans are confident Boulware can be successful in his bid to win a seat in the heavily Democratic district that includes parts of Leon and Jefferson counties.

"It's not about being Democrat or Republican, it's about the people," Boulware said.

Said Gov. Charlie Crist in a statement, "His hard work ethic and dedication will translate well in the Florida House of Representatives."

Once a Democrat, Boulware registered as a Republican in Florida in 2003. He is now a partner in a local automobile dealership. He has a bachelor's degree from Florida State in managem ent information systems.

Three Democrats are competing for their party's nomination in hopes of keeping the seat being vacated by state Rep. Loranne Ausley of Tallahassee, who is term limited. Republicans hold 77 seats in the House to 42 for Democrats with one vacant seat.

During his career with the Baltimore Ravens, Boulware was the NFL defensive rookie of the year in 1997 and also won a Super Bowl ring with the team in 2000.
