A New Sanctuary for a Flock of Thousands
About 7,000 people attend First Baptist Church of Glenarden. The main sanctuary is generally packed, and the Rev. John K. Jenkins regularly greets those who watch the service from overflow rooms.

"The church gives you a sense of belonging," she said.
Crofton resident Antoinette Byrams said she has become an active member since joining the church last year. "Sometimes I attend all five services," she said. "As soon as church is over, I get back in line to come back and hear the word again. It is not about the pastor. It is the people."
Byrams said her husband was skeptical about attending a big church until he attended its annual marriage retreat. "It is such a home feeling here," she said. "It is not about the size of the church. It is about the unity of the church."
Humility is important, too, Jenkins said.
"Humility is the thing that attracts the heart of God," he said. "Every day I wake up, I can only do what I am doing by the grace of God."
Likewise, God's grace made the new sanctuary possible, Jenkins said.
To help celebrate the big move, the church has planned a month of activities. The first event will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday. On Sunday at 6:30 p.m., recording artist and pastor Norman Hutchins, along with the group Israel and New Breed, are slated to perform. Bishop T.D. Jakes is scheduled to preach Wednesday during a 7:30 p.m. worship service and gospel singer CeCe Winans is on the schedule for Oct. 5 at 7:30 p.m.
