The Redskins took a 20-9 lead early in the quarter on a drive that began in the third period at their 37. By the start of the final quarter, the Redskins had moved to the Eagles 32-yard line. Washington converted two third downs to set up Portis's six-yard touchdown on first and goal. The first was a nine-yard completion to Cooley on third and eight, and the second was an 18-yard completion to Todd Yoder on third and 10. The Eagles cut the lead to eight on a 22-yard field goal from Akers and had a chance to tie late, but the defense held on the Eagles' final drive when rookie safety LaRon Landry jarred the ball loose from Kevin Curtis on fourth and six to force an incompletion with 1:05 to play.
