I take issue with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) on its constant bashing of Rep. James P. Moran Jr. (D-Va.) ["Moran Upsets Jewish Groups Again," Metro, Sept. 15].
AIPAC cannot stomach any criticism of Israel and brands anyone who dares to speak up as an anti-Semite or a self-hating Jew.
Nearly everyone involved in Middle East politics knows that AIPAC wields unequaled power in the discussion. Just criticize Israel for its role in Middle East instability, and AIPAC will stop all dialogue under the rubrics I mentioned. This attitude demonstrates contempt for free speech and democratic ideals, the very ideals on which Israel was founded.
Until an open discussion is held on the issues that have led to instability in the Middle East, the rise of terrorism and the emergence of rogue leaders such as the current Iranian president, AIPAC will continue to exercise unparalleled influence in American politics.
What is needed is not name-calling. What is needed is peace -- for Israel, the Palestinians and the Middle East. If we can achieve that, half the battle against terrorism will have been won.
