Most people who know Thomas Dolby do so because of "She Blinded Me With Science," the quirky synth-laden hit from the '80s. But depending on what cellphone you own, you may well hear a bit of his work every day, because he's the founder of Beatnik Inc., the world's top provider of audio for cellphones. Dolby never gave up music, even while becoming an entrepreneur, and now he is on tour with the Jazz Mafia Horns (some of the top young jazz players from the San Francisco Bay area). Dolby performs a show that blends live jazz with electronica. Hear it at the Birchmere (703-549-7500). . . . DJ Khaled and rapper Rick Ross represent how Miami does it at Love (202-636-9030). . . . Dressing appropriately is always wise when attending a Southern Culture on the Skids show -- appropriately meaning defensively, since it's not unusual for banana pudding and pieces of fried chicken to fly through the air during the group's performances. The funny, and rocking, group is at the Capitol City Carnival at Bull Run Regional Park (540-745-3378, 703-631-0550) in Centreville. ( George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic and Fishbone are there Saturday; Junior Brown performs Sunday. There are several other artists playing during the three-day event; visit http:/
Saturday
The Deedle Deedle Dees play rock-Americana for kids. Many of their songs have a history or science theme ("Underground Railroad," "Nellie Bly," "Rancher Ants"). It's not all about the learning though; the group mixes in some silly songs, too. The group makes its area debut with an 11 a.m. show at Jammin' Java (703-255-1566). Check it out and learn something while your kids dance. . . . Eclectic world music performer Kiran Ahluwalia is at the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage (202-467-4600) for a free concert. She blends fado with ghazal, jazz and more as her style continues to evolve.
Wednesday
Riff-erific rockers Queens of the Stone Age are at Rams Head Live (410-244-1131) for a show that should be quite a party. . . . Critical fave Rilo Kiley is at the 9:30 club (202-393-0930) Wednesday and Thursday. The group's latest CD, "Under the Blacklight," has a poppier, dancier sound than its earlier work, but it still boasts the wonderful Jenny Lewis and is a disc that grows on you with each listen.
Thursday
Nellie McKay is quite entertaining. She's all over the stylistic map and will puncture a serious lyrical mood with a sudden injection of humor. She also can be quite chatty between songs with all sorts of anecdotes. (Her previous forays into stand-up comedy no doubt serve her well in that regard.) See her at the Birchmere (703-549-7500).
