BOOK of the week

The Mysterious Edge of the Heroic World

Sunday, September 23, 2007

Amedeo Kaplan and his mother have recently moved from New York to St. Malo, Florida, where he meets William Wilcox. William and his mother are cleaning out the house of an old woman who lives next door to Amedeo.

The boys soon form an unusual friendship.

Amedeo shares with William his secret wish to be the first person to find a lost treasure. He's not sure what the treasure might be or where it's to be found. Certainly, an unlikely place would seem to be the cluttered house of Aida Lily Tull Zender, the elderly lady next door.

But Amedeo is drawn to Mrs. Zender and her house, without quite knowing why. And it's there that he and William unravel the story of a piece of art and its connection to both heroism and wickedness under the Nazis during World War II.

Note: This book is for mature readers -- both for the subject matter and the language. Words such as semaphore, infrasonic, degenerate and mise-en-sc¿ne will keep you flipping through the dictionary.
