Offense Stalls Behind Revamped Offensive Line

The Washington Redskins offense produced 260 total yards and was limited to 82 yards rushing on 27 carries -- a three-yard average -- in the team's 24-17 loss yesterday to the New York Giants. The Redskins' inability to establish the running game in the second half was a major factor in the Giants overcoming a 14-point halftime deficit.

Offensive lineman Jason Fabini, a converted tackle, made his first career start at right guard in place of Randy Thomas, who had arm surgery last week. Right tackle Todd Wade started for the second consecutive week after former starting tackle Jon Jansen suffered a season-ending injury in the opener against Miami.

Although Fabini and Wade are new in their roles, their lack of familiarity with each other wasn't the biggest problem.

"Those guys are both professionals and they know their jobs . . . their responsibilities," left guard Pete Kendall said. "There were a lot of things we could have done better as an offense today, it's just as simple as that."

Groins, Ankles and Feet

Wide receiver Santana Moss had three catches for 82 yards -- including a 49-yard reception -- while playing with a groin injury. Slowed by a groin injury in the preseason, Moss is expected to be re-evaluated today. . . . Left defensive tackle Cornelius Griffin left the game briefly in the third quarter because of a bruised ankle but returned. "It was nothing," Griffin said. "Just football." . . .

Defensive end Phillip Daniels, inactive against Philadelphia because of a foot injury, started on the left side against New York. Daniels had three tackles and knocked down two passes but required medical attention on the field in the third quarter.

"My foot felt pretty good, better than it has been, so I was just glad to get back" on the field, Daniels said. "I felt like I was moving around pretty good and doing stuff to try to help the team. I just got to keep it up every week now."

Smoot Gets More Rest

After starting the season opener against Miami, cornerback Fred Smoot was on the inactive list for the second consecutive game. Smoot was limited in practice the last two weeks because of a hamstring injury, but the six-year veteran recently said he expected to play against the Giants. The team has a bye this week, so Smoot has more time to heal before the Redskins face the Lions on Oct. 7 at FedEx Field. . . .

Offensive lineman Rick DeMulling, signed because right guard Thomas is out at least 10 to 12 weeks after having arm surgery, was active despite participating in only one full practice. The Redskins also brought in veteran guard Keydrick Vincent for a tryout and physical last week.

Are Redskins D.C.-Bound?

Redskins owner Daniel Snyder said in an interview with Comcast SportsNet that aired last night that it's possible the team will move back to a stadium in the District.

Snyder said the Redskins have a long-term deal at FedEx Field in Landover and intend to remain at the facility well into the future. But pressed on the possibility of the franchise playing again in D.C., Snyder said: "Someday, maybe. We'll see what happens."

Snyder also said he trusts Coach Joe Gibbs fully and sees no need to hire a general manager to work with Gibbs.
