May 17-- The U.S. Supreme Court outlaws segregation in schools.

Sept. 3-- A federal judge orders the desegregation of Central High the following day.
Sept. 4-- Arkansas Gov. Orval Faubus orders National Guard troops to block the Little Rock Nine.
Sept. 10-- The U.S. Justice Department seeks an order to force Faubus to comply with desegregation.
Sept. 20-- A federal judge orders Faubus to remove the National Guard.
Sept. 22-- Ernest Green Jr., the only senior among the black students, turns 16.
Sept. 23-- The students are admitted but are sent home early for their safety.
Sept. 24-- President Dwight Eisenhower sends in the 101st Airborne to enforce desegregation and federalizes the state's National Guard.
Sept. 25-- The black students are escorted into Central High by the troops.
Nov. 27 -- The federal troops leave, but the Guard stays.
