Both teams have already equaled their victory total from a year ago, but that just lets them know it would be a disappointment if they don't surpass it this season.

"All that means is we're guaranteed to be as good as we were last season," said Wootton Coach Greg Malling, whose team won its second straight, 24-13, over previously undefeated Whitman last week. "This is the first time we're had any kind of momentum, but the easiest way to lose it is to go out and lose this week."

Wootton, which has had consecutive 2-8 seasons, hasn't won more than four games since going 12-1 and advancing to 1990 4A final. The Patriots got standout defensive play in last week's victory. Senior linebacker Mike Ashe had 10 tackles, senior defensive back Robbie Rosecrans has a pair of interceptions and senior linebacker Brendan Ray returned a fumble 76 yards for a touchdown, in addition to scoring on an 11-yard run.

But no performance was more surprising than that of senior John Dillon, who normally plays on the offensive line. Injuries, though, forced Dillon to play both ways, and the 275-pound senior responded with eight tackles, four sacks and an interception.

"We don't see it as an upset," Malling said. "We believe we're a good team."

So does Clarksburg, which has outscored its three opponents, 56-6, in the first halves of games. Coyotes quarterback Cody Martin has completed 12 of 15 passes combined the past two weeks and thrown for four touchdowns.
