Apple expert Tom Burford thinks there's a surefire way to appreciate the differences among apples varieties: a side-by-side tasting. He recommends gathering at least six kinds you've never tried and then slowly working your way from apple to apple.

For a guided trial, attend one of Burford's tastings this fall, when he will have samples of Albemarle or Newtown Pippin, Ashmead's Kernel, Roxbury Russet and/or Golden Russet:

Oct. 27: Annual apple tasting at Thomas Jefferson's Tufton Farm at Monticello near Charlottesville. $10 per person, reservation required; 434-984-9822 or http://www.monticello.org.

Nov. 3: Tasting at the Apple Harvest Festival, Rural Ridge Orchard, North Garden, Va. Free. 434-297-2326 or http://www.vintagevirginiaapples.com.
