Charles County detectives were sifting through a paucity of clues this morning after a fatal shooting last night of a 71-year-old Waldorf man who was found on a porch in a Waldorf townhouse community.

"We don't have much," said Maj. Joseph C. Montminy, Charles County's assistant sheriff of operations.

Officers were called to the 3300 block of Ryon Court in Waldorf shortly before 8 p.m. They found Joseph Gilford Hickman with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was pronounced dead on the scene. Detectives don't know if Hickman was the intended target.

Detectives believe two male suspects, who were on foot, fired an unknown number of rounds and fled the scene. Investigators don't know yet if the assailants got to the scene by vehicle. The slaying was Charles' third of the year, Montminy said.

Officers searched the area, which is near woods, using a police dog to help, but couldn't find the suspects. Detectives urge anyone with information to call the Charles County Sheriff's Office, 301-932-7777, or Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-TIPS.

Ryon Court is part of a townhouse community. Three women in the neighborhood said it's normally a peaceful place.
