There's a free or nominally priced beginning salsa lesson (followed by dancing) almost every night of the week in New York. Note: I prefer leather-bottomed shoes for salsa. However, any dress shoes will work fine. You don't need to go designer in any of New York's salsa clubs, but do avoid baggy jeans.

SALSA SPOTS: The Copacabana closed its 34th Street location in June and plans to reopen in a new space later this fall. In the meantime, official Copa-brand salsa nights are held Fridays at Columbus 72 (246A Columbus Ave., between 71st and 72nd streets, 212-769-1492; $10 admission, $5 with discount pass from http://www.copacabanany.com). Check the Copa's Web site for other doings.

The DJs at Club Cache (221 W. 46th St., 347-385-6745; $10 with discount pass from http://www.justsalsa.com) spin classic salsa, mambo and a touch of cha-cha-cha.

At SOB's (204 Varick St. at Houston Street; 212-243-4940; free for women between 5 and 7 p.m., $15 for all after 8 p.m.), New York's hottest contemporary salsa band leaders, such as Jimmy Bosch, Willie Villegas and Johnny Pacheco, perform Friday nights after free 7 p.m. salsa lessons.

Those brave souls who plan to hit Queens can follow in my footsteps at Hairos (81-09 Roosevelt Ave., Jackson Heights, 718-533-8523; $2). Chibcha (79-05 Roosevelt Ave., Jackson Heights, 718-429-9033) has recently sunk to gentlemen's club infamy.

INFORMATION: SalsaNewYork.com ( http://www.salsanewyork.com) includes a convenient "Partner Search" to arrange a salsa date before going to New York. Also check New York Salsa, a Web magazine dedicated to Latin music, dance and culture, at http://www.justsalsa.com/newyork. -- W.P.
