Why Par 3? Sometimes called executive courses, sometimes pitch 'n' putts, par-3 courses are oft-overlooked jewels. Real golfers scoff at their compactness; miniature golfers don't like to use irons and wedges. But the courses are challenging and, if taken seriously, can be helpful to a player's short game.

In this area, par-3s include the nine-hole Needwood Executive Course in Rockville (301-948-1075, http://www.montgomerycountygolf.com/NW_home.html) and the 18-hole Burke Lake Golf Course in Fairfax Station (703-323-1641, http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/golf/burkegolf).

A warning: These courses can be crowded, so call for tee times. -- L.W.
