D.C. DEVELOPMENT
Poplar Point Open House Held
About 200 residents of wards 7 and 8 met yesterday at Matthews Memorial Baptist Church to discuss the future of Poplar Point, 110 parkland acres on the Anacostia River in Southeast Washington.
The event was sponsored by D.C. Council members Marion Barry (D-Ward 8) and Yvette M. Alexander (D-Ward 7), who say they are forming a Poplar Point Coalition to ensure that city leaders support a plan to build a soccer stadium and mixed-use development at the site. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D) broke off stadium talks with D.C. United principal partner Victor B. MacFarlane this summer and is seeking alternative proposals.
Barry said the new coalition will write a "strong letter" to the mayor in support of MacFarlane's plans. A public hearing will be held on the future of Poplar Point Saturday at the Thurgood Marshall School. Those wishing to testify should call John Adams at 202-727-6683.

MONTGOMERY STABBINGS
Man Violated Probation
Kevin Mendoza, one of the alleged gang members convicted in the August 2005 stabbings at Springbrook High School in Silver Spring, was sentenced last week to three years in prison for violating the terms of his probation, Montgomery County prosecutors said.
Mendoza, 20, who served 18 months in the Springbrook attacks, was arrested in June after police found two machetes and a three-foot pipe inside a car he was in. He was convicted in that case on two counts of carrying a concealed dangerous weapon. Prosecutors said that at sentencing on that charge, they will ask for further prison time for Mendoza, who they say is a member of the street gang MS-13.

FATAL ACCIDENTS
2 Killed in Separate Md. Crashes
Andre Trinh, 57, of Hagerstown, Md., died just after midnight yesterday in a crash on Interstate 270 north of Comus Road in Montgomery County. Maryland State Police his vehicle struck the rear of a truck that was attempting an illegal U-turn onto an emergency crossover.
In Prince George's County, Ryan Waters, 16, of the 7300 block of Leona Street died when his car struck a utility pole in Forestville, police said. The 1:30 a.m. crash in the 7200 block of Leona Street apparently ignited an electrical fire nearby which was quickly put out, fire officials said.
