Atholton senior tailback Kelechi Odocha became the Washington area's first running back to break the 1,000-yard mark this season, gaining 204 yards on 27 carries in Saturday's 12-7 loss to Marriotts Ridge. Odocha has rushed for 1,145 yards in six games and has nine touchdowns.

"I never expected it, but that's how this season has worked out. Our offensive line came to play," said Odocha, whose group up front includes 6-foot-3, 285-pound guard Nathan Bunner. Odocha had a 249-yard game against Howard last month, and already has touchdown runs of 62, 63 and 66 yards.

The Raider stands just 5-7 and weighs 175 pounds. He is a regular in the weight room, and says he can bench-press 330 pounds. Odocha will get his biggest test Friday night when Atholton (4-2) plays at No. 7 River Hill (6-0), which uses a three-man defensive front with five linebackers.

"We're very motivated," Odocha said. "I go on college visits and the coaches ask, 'How'd you do -- and when do you play River Hill?' They just fly to the football, so we're going to have to slow that down and find a way to get around that."
