Rock Cartwright returned the opening kickoff 80 yards, but the Redskins got nothing after Shaun Suisham missed a 41-yard field goal attempt wide left. Arizona failed to do anything on offense, and the Redskins then padded their lead with an 11-play, 59-yard drive, highlighted by a 26-yard catch from Antwaan Randle El and Portis's second touchdown run of the afternoon. The Cardinals then embarked on a bizarre drive that included a third-down unnecessary roughness call on LaRon Landry, and a third-down unsportsmanlike conduct call against Fletcher for taunting the Arizona bench. As the quarter ended, the Cardinals had the ball at the Washington 5.
