D.C. Ranks as Worldly, Yet Unfriendly

What a worldly bunch we are -- and so unfriendly.

At least that's the assessment in Travel and Leisure's 2007 list of "America's favorite cities." Among America's top 25, Washington comes in at number one when it comes to being worldly and nurturing an international culture, a lowly 23rd for friendliness.

Other basement-level rankings for our fair city include 25th for "fun" (New Orleans is number one), 22nd for "style" and 24th for "attractive people." (Only Philadelphia had fewer of those). The prettiest people live in Miami and San Diego, according to the poll.

We may not dress very well, 18th, but we are number one when it comes to architecture, historical sites and monuments.

The rankings are based on polling conducted this year by the magazine and CNN Headline News. Pollsters asked travelers and residents what they like and dislike about 25 urban destinations in the United States.

New York received more number one rankings than any other city, 14, including top scores for theater, stylish people and big-name restaurants. New Orleans ranked number one in several categories, including cocktail hour and cheap eats. The nation's friendliest city, according to the poll, is Charleston, S.C.

San Antonio is America's most affordable city; Washington is number 19.

Look for the best barbecue in Austin (Washington ranks 25th), the best pizza in Chicago and the best coffee, not surprisingly, in Seattle.
