HOW I BOOKED: To find the resort, I checked booking sites such as Orbitz and Expedia, guidebooks, the Jamaica tourism Web site ( http://www.visitjamaica.com) and Trip- Advisor ( http://www.tripadvisor.com), finally booking Club Ambiance through Caribbean Hotels ( http://www.hotel-caribbean.com). I paid $468 double, including taxes.

Because I went the a la carte route, I had to book my own flight, which I found on the American Airlines Web site. I paid $522 round trip from Reagan National Airport to Montego Bay, with a two-hour layover in Miami.

WHAT WAS INCLUDED: Three nights' hotel room; unlimited drinks; three meals a day (lobster and steak cost extra) in the dining room or at the grill; late-night pizza and midday snacks; non-motorized water sports (kayaks and paddleboats); use of the gym (treadmill, exercise bike, stair machine, free weights, multipurpose weight machine); and round-trip airport transfer if you book through the hotel.

WHAT WASN'T: Internet ($2.50 for five minutes), mini safe ($3 per day) and most excursions.

EXCURSIONS: Lots of trips are offered, including visits to Dunn's River Falls, shopping in Ocho Rios, tours of Kingston and rafting on the Black River, all of which can be booked at the info desk in the lobby; most cost from $10 to $85 a person. (Our trip to Bob Marley's home cost $50 each.)

Scuba and snorkeling are run by the on-site dive shop, a local outfitter called Jamaqua Dive Centre, but its hours were unpredictable: No one at the front desk could tell us when the dives were, and we went repeatedly on Saturday, only to find it closed. On Sunday morning, Jay woke up early and stopped by the office every 15 minutes or so until about 8, when it finally opened. He signed up for a 9 a.m. dive for him ($40 for certified divers, includes all equipment) and snorkeling for me ($20).
