Career history: Currently chairman and chief executive of Merrill Lynch. Since joining the firm in 1986 as vice president of investment banking, O'Neal has held a number of positions, including president and chief executive; president and chief operating officer; executive vice president and chief financial officer; president, U.S. private client group; and executive vice president and co-head, corporate and institutional client group. From 1978 to 1987, O'Neal held a number of finance positions at General Motors.
