These organizations need volunteer help for a day, for a week or on a regular basis.
The American Councils for International Education seek volunteers to evaluate the scholarship applications of students from Afghanistan, Serbia, Montenegro and the former Soviet Union. Funding for these programs is provided by the State Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Students will spend one year living with a U.S. family and attending high school. Evaluation of applications will take place at the American Councils' office at Dupont Circle from November through March. Training will be provided. Anne Arundel County Board of Elections is recruiting volunteers to work as judges for the 2008 primary and general presidential elections. Judges must be registered Maryland voters, fluent in English and available Feb. 12 and Nov. 4. Judges must not be associated with a candidate, campaign or political committee, and must not engage in partisan or political activity while on duty. For information, call 410-222-6600.
Anne Arundel Medical Center's Blood Donor Center, in the acute-care pavilion on the first floor, seeks donors by appointment. All types are needed, especially A- and O-positive. Donation hours are 8:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Mondays, 8:15 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 7:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Thursdays and 7:15 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Fridays. Arundel Lodge provides residential and day psychiatric rehabilitation programs for about 160 people with mental illness. Volunteers are needed to help teach life skills, play board or card games at a drop-in center, go for walks with members, help with social or recreational events or serve on the board. The Caring Collection needs volunteers 14 and older to help make stained-glass angels and sun-catchers on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays in Annapolis. No experience is needed. Volunteers will learn how to create stained-glass objects, which will be sold to benefit oncology patients at Anne Arundel Medical Center and Johns Hopkins Hospital. Chrysalis House in Crownsville provides addiction treatment services for women in a residential setting. It needs volunteers to teach basic computer skills and r¿sum¿ writing, help with building maintenance, work in the child-care center and help with recreational activities. Some volunteer positions are flexible, with the possibility of day or evening hours. Internships for bachelor's and master's programs are often available. Guiding Eyes for the Blind seeks volunteers to raise puppies that will become guide dogs. Responsibilities include spending 14 to 18 months to nuture a puppy and to teach it obedience and social skills. In addition, volunteers attend classes and puppy evaluations. Junior League of Annapolis needs volunteers to work on projects supporting children and families, including a teen mentoring program operated in conjunction with the Anne Arundel Medical Center Women's and Children's Division, the September Back to School book bag project, fundraising, serving on the board of directors and helping with other programs and services.
