INDIANAPOLIS, Oct. 31 -- Washington Wizards Coach Eddie Jordan named Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison the team's captains prior to Wednesday night's regular season opener at Indiana.

Jordan said he discussed the matter with Butler and Jamison as well as Gilbert Arenas and Antonio Daniels before making the final decision. It will be Butler's first season as an NBA captain. Jamison filled the role last season along with center Etan Thomas, who is out indefinitely after undergoing heart surgery.

"Gil's a leader in his own way and Antonio is a leader in his own way, but I just wanted to name two captains," Jordan said. "I made the decision because Antawn is a professional and Caron is a professional and he's shown that he's taken steps forward as far as being a leader."

NBA Makes Changes With Referees

Following the Tim Donaghy gambling scandal that rocked the NBA this summer, the league decided to make referee assignments known on the morning of games. In the past, media and teams did not learn of assignments until an hour or so before tip-off.

The referees for Wednesday's opener were Joey Crawford, Derrick Stafford and Olandis Poole.
