BOSTON, Nov. 2 -- The Washington Wizards believed they came into the season with a deeper bench, one that would at least give the starters a rest by carrying its share of the playmaking and scoring load.
[an error occurred while processing this directive]Though it's unquestionably early to make rash judgments, the bench has not made an impact in opening losses at Indiana and Boston.
After totaling 17 points on 7-of-20 shooting in Wednesday's overtime loss to the Pacers, four reserves combined to score two points in the first half of Friday's 103-83 loss to the Celtics. Forward Darius Songaila (13 points in 24 minutes) was the only bench player to have an impact.
Antonio Daniels had an assist and a rebound in eight minutes; Andray Blatche was overmatched trying to defend Paul Pierce during a three-minute stint in the second quarter and didn't return until the game was decided; and rookie Nick Young scored five points on 1-of-5 shooting.
'Gilbert Being Gilbert'
When asked about Gilbert Arenas's preseason guarantee, via his blog, that the Wizards would win Friday night's game, Boston's Paul Pierce didn't seem to mind.
"Gilbert being Gilbert," Pierce told reporters. "He just wants attention."
Pierce has noticed how little respect the Wizards were getting going into the season. "Everyone forgets that they had the best record in the East back around the all-star break last year," Pierce said.
