The injury bug didn't take long to bite the Washington Wizards this season. The team -- already playing without veteran center Etan Thomas, who underwent open-heart surgery on Oct. 11 -- learned yesterday that rookie forward-center Oleksiy Pecherov is expected to miss up to six weeks with a hairline fracture in his right ankle.
[an error occurred while processing this directive]Pecherov suffered the injury last Sunday when he came down on a teammate's foot in practice and did not join the team on the road trip to Indiana and Boston. The injury originally was believed to be a severe sprain but an MRI exam revealed the fracture.
In six preseason games, Pecherov -- the Wizards' first-round draft pick in 2006 -- averaged eight points and five rebounds in 20 minutes and Coach Eddie Jordan said he had plans to use Pecherov in spot duty.
The injury leaves the Wizards with 11 healthy players.
On the Road to Nowhere
The Wizards finished the preseason with three straight road games -- all losses -- and opened the regular season with losses at Indiana and Boston, but Jordan wasn't blaming the schedule for the 0-2 start.
"I'm not looking for any excuses," Jordan said following Friday's loss at Boston. "That's the nature of the business and we had plenty of rest. We just have to get things done."
The Wizards may want to get used to wearing their road uniforms: Beginning Thursday at New Jersey, seven of the next 12 games will be away.
