Student's Swastika Claim Unravels

A George Washington University student who told school officials that someone had drawn swastikas on her dormitory room door was responsible for the incidents, a university spokeswoman said yesterday.

The student, who was not identified, had said swastikas appeared on her door over several days last month. A hidden camera positioned in response to the incidents, in Mitchell Hall, led police to interview the student, who admitted responsibility, said the spokeswoman, Tracy Schario.

The student will not face student judicial action, and officials will determine whether D.C. or federal laws were broken, Schario said.

Over the weekend, another GWU student was identified in connection with the writing of racial epithets and the drawing of swastikas on doors in another dorm, New Hall, Schario said. The U.S. attorney's office is reviewing the case to determine whether criminal charges should be filed. That student has been barred from campus.

CRIME

Robbery Suspect Dies in Car Crash

A man suspected in a strong-arm robbery died late Sunday in a car crash in the District after being chased by Montgomery County police officers, police said.

Ricardo C. Ebron, 45, of Northeast Washington crashed into a fence just south of the Montgomery County line about 11:20 p.m., shortly after eluding Montgomery officers, said Cpl. Jimmy Robinson, a Montgomery police spokesman.

The crash occurred in the 7000 block of Eastern Avenue, just south of Silver Spring, Robinson said. No one else was injured in the crash, which is being investigated by D.C. police, Robinson said.

Officers began chasing Ebron after receiving a report of a strong-arm robbery in the unit block of East Wayne Avenue, Robinson said. A woman told police she had been accosted and robbed by a man driving a black Jeep Cherokee, the spokesman said.

Montgomery officers spotted a vehicle matching that description near the crime scene and attempted to pull it over. The driver sped up, and officers chased him.

"The guy attempted to elude us, and we lost him," Robinson said. "We continued to canvass the area, searching for him."

County officers were notified that the vehicle had crashed in the District. Robinson said the driver was not being pursued when he crashed.

Ebron was pronounced dead at the scene, Robinson said.
